What is a 5 MB test file?
Five megabytes is what real users upload. Photos from current phones are typically 3 to 6 MB, so this is the size that most often meets a limit somebody forgot to raise: PHP ships with a 2 MB cap on uploaded files, and Vercel Functions accept request bodies up to 4.5 MB.
It is also a significant number in Amazon S3, where every part of a multipart upload except the last must be at least 5 MiB. This file is exactly one minimum-sized part.
In everyday terms: A photo straight from a phone camera, or about five minutes of MP3 audio.
Limits near 5 MB
Default limits in widely used software that a 5 MB file is useful for testing. Defaults change between versions, so confirm them in the documentation for the version you run.
| System | Limit | What happens at 5 MB |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | 2 MB per uploaded file by default (upload_max_filesize) | A 5 MB upload fails on an untuned PHP installation. |
| Vercel Functions | 4.5 MB request body | Larger uploads must go directly to object storage. |
| Amazon S3 multipart upload | 5 MiB minimum part size | This file is exactly one minimum part. |
| AWS Lambda | 6 MB synchronous invocation payload | 5 MB of binary data exceeds it once base64-encoded. |
| Browser localStorage | About 5 MB per origin | Storing this file as text fills the quota. |
| Django | 2.5 MB in memory by default | Larger uploads are streamed to a temporary file instead of held in memory. |
Good for
- Simulating photo uploads from phones
- Testing serverless body limits
- Testing image resizing and memory use
- Checking upload progress and cancel behaviour

5 MB files: questions
- Why does a 5 MB file fail on a function with a 6 MB limit?
- Binary bodies are usually base64-encoded on the way into a function, which adds a third. Five megabytes of file becomes about 6.7 MB of payload.
